Road Accidents in India
India is one of the busiest countries in the world in terms of road traffic due to which road accidents have been a major concern across different states in India. While India comprises of only 1% of the world's vehicle population, it also accounted for approximately 6% of the global road accidents. Every year, about 150,000 people lose their lives on India's roads and close to 70% of the accidents involves the age group 18 - 45. This unbalanced effect of mortality rates on the economically productive segment might significantly slow down the GDP growth.
The visual below looks into the inter-state statistics of road accidents, injuries and deaths from 2009 to 2012.

The total number of road accidents and the number of persons injured/killed across states depends on the size of the state in terms of population, road length, road transport, economic activity in the state, quality of safety related infrastructure, and traffic law enforcement in place.
